Richmond Township is a township in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,500 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 23.7 square miles (61.3 km²), of which, 23.6 square miles (61.2 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.17%) is water. It is drained by the Maiden Creek into the Schuylkill River and its southern boundary is on South Mountain.

Its villages include Kempville, Kirbyville, Moselem (pronounced "mo-SAY-lem"), Moselem Springs, Virginville, and Walnuttown. Its numbered routes are U.S. Highway 222 and Route 662, which intersect in Moselem Springs, and Route 143. Other local roads of note include Crystal Cave Road, Fleetwood Road, Fleetwood-Lyons Road, Maiden Creek Road, Park Road, and Richmond Road.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,500 people, 1,416 households, and 957 families residing in the township. The population density was 148.2 people per square mile (57.2/km²). There were 1,484 housing units at an average density of 62.8/sq mi (24.3/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.54% White, 0.14% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.97% of the population.

There were 1,416 households out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were married couples living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the township the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.1 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $42,564, and the median income for a family was $52,950. Males had a median income of $37,028 versus $24,730 for females.
